Uploading an existing site with Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004
Dreamweaver is used by more professional Web designers than any other program. The guide below will assume that
you already have a site in Dreamweaver ready to upload. It will detail how to connect your remote webspace on
our server and upload files. More information on Dreamweaver can be found from the
Macromedia site.
-
Firstly open up Dreamweaver and select your site.
-
Then using the pull down box on the right hand side select
"Manage Sites...".
-
The manage sites window will now appear, select the site you are working with
and then click the "Edit..." button.
-
This will show the edit site window. At the top left of this window click the advanced
tab. Then enter your web address in the "HTTP Address" text box.
-
Using the vertical menu on the left hand side of the window select the "Remote
Info" option. Then select "FTP" from the "Access" pulldown box and then
enter your FTP details in the boxes provided below. Make sure you to enter "htdocs/" in the "Host
directoy" box and to tick the save password tick box. Once your FTP information has been entered you
can now test your settings by clicking on the "Test" button.
-
If all FTP settings are correct you will see the following confirmation box, if not double check the FTP information
provided on the email you received at registration. Click "OK" on the confirmation box to return to the
site edit window. Click the "OK" button at the bottom of this window to return to the manage sites window.
Click "Done" on this window to return to the main dreamweaver page.
-
On the right hand side of the main Dreamweaver window choose "Remote view" from the far right pull down box.
Then click the "Connect" button just under the site name pulldown box (see image for help). This will now
connect you to the remote site and show you the contents of the "htdocs" directory were you need to upload your files.
At this point you may wish to delete the default "index.html" as it is not needed anymore.
-
Now switch back to the local view of your files by selecting "Local view" from the far right pull down box.
Then select one or more files (by holding down the shift key) to upload. After selecting the desired files click the
"Put files" button which is a blue up arrow just above the file list (see image)
-
Before the file transfer starts you may be asked if you want to upload any dependant files. We suggest you click the
"yes" button as it will also upload any images etc. that your pages may need.
-
While the files are being uploaded you will see the a progress window like the one shown below. After the upload process
has completed load up your web browser and surf to your web address. You should now see your new site.
